The
following is an example of the daily
routine for a Los Angeles County Fire
Fighter:
7:00
am Shift Change:
Arrive at fire house and begin checking
equipment
8:00
am Line-Up:
Meeting at dinner table to discuss the
day’s agenda (i.e. inspections, drills,
station projects, community events,
daily chores, cooking schedule, etc.).
8:30
am Physical Training
– One hour mandatory exercise period
(i.e. weight lifting, running, etc.).
9:30
am Clean up
– Shower and get in uniform.
10:00 am House Work
- Clean fire house (i.e. make beds,
toilets, kitchen, showers, sweep and mop
all floors, empty all trash cans, vacuum
all carpets, dust horizontal surfaces,
polish all fixtures, clean fire engine).
11:00 am Market Run
- Go shopping for lunch and dinner
(note: assigned cook must prepare lunch
and dinner for entire shift.)
12:00 pm Lunch
- Prepare lunch and eat.
1:30
pm Clean Up

Scrub dishes and mop floor.
2:00
pm Daily Work
- Inspections, chores, drill, community
events, weekly maintenance as needed
(i.e. mow lawn, detail fire apparatus,
detail cleaning of kitchen or bathrooms,
air out beds, etc.)
5:00
pm Chow
– Cook prepares dinner and fire crew
eats together.
7:00
pm Clean Up
- Scrub dishes and mop floor.
8:00
pm Personal Time
- New Fire Fighters are encouraged to
study.
10:00 pm Bed Down
- Try and get some sleep. Fire
Fighters are expected to respond to
emergencies for the entire 24 hour shift
regardless of the time of day or night.
Daily schedule may change to accommodate
emergency calls and priority duties.
Approximately 85% of the emergency
incidents that fire personnel respond to
are emergency medical calls followed by
5% fire responses and 10% other
emergency operational situations.
7:00 am Wake Up Bell

Daily dispatch test (7 am sharp) remove
bedding and exchange pertinent
information with on-coming Fire Fighters
before going home.
The following is an example of the
typical month work schedule. You
will be assigned to a particular shift
and expected to work the designated
shift days:

Shift Work Schedule

You work 24 hour shifts.

Your family and loved ones will be
left alone while you are on duty.

You may be required to sleep on your
days off after responding to numerous
calls after midnight.

You will be required to work on
weekends and holidays.
Emergency Incident Work Schedule
-
You may be “recalled” (must work even
though you are not scheduled to work
the day of the recall) to work during
emergency situations.

You face the possibility of being away
from home for up to 4
consecutive days
during extreme emergency situations.

You are expected to report for duty by
7:00
am. Sometimes earlier in extreme
emergency situations.
This Line of Work Could Be Hazardous to
Your Health

You could be exposed to cancer causing
chemicals and materials during
responses involving fire incidents,
hazardous materials incidents.

You could be exposed to adverse
weather conditions such as extreme
heat/sun exposure, extreme cold, rain,
snow, wind, etc.

You could be exposed to different
types of illnesses and diseases during
emergency medical incidents you are
working.
